Lady Bears Win First National Championship

March 24, 2012 – Sequohay Griffin scored 24 points and Shaw rallied to win its first national title, beating Ashland 88-82 in overtime on Friday night in the national championship game. Aslea Williams added 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Kyria Buford had 10 points for the Lady Bears (29-6), who erased an 11-point halftime deficit. Jena Stutzman scored 32 points, and Kari Daugherty had 24 points and 15 rebounds for the Eagles (33-2). Alyssa Miller added 12 points for Ashland.

Lady Bears Down JCSU For Second Straight CIAA Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Shaw University wins again in the latest matchup between two of the CIAA's premiere women's basketball programs.

Tournament MVP Aslea Williams scored 17 points as Shaw toppled Johnson C. Smith University 72-66 Saturday (March 3) in the CIAA championship game at Time Warner Cable Arena. The Lady Bears captured their second straight CIAA title and seventh in 10 seasons.

Edward Peck Addressed Faculty and Staff at Shaw University

Ambassador Edward Peck, retired, an expert on Middle East politics and diplomatic relations address a full house of faculty, students and staff Friday morning. His presentation, entitled "Neither Quick Nor Easy: Doing What's Best for America, Israel, Palestine and the Middle East - An Effort to Provoke Thoughts - Not People," was one of three he made in the Raleigh Area.

Yancy Returns As Shaw Interim President

Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy, a native of Alabama, rejoins the Shaw University family as interim president, having served in the post for more than a year in 2009 and 2010. Her appointment in June 2009 made her the University’s first female president. Dr. Yancy previously served as the twelfth president of Johnson C. Smith University and was the first female elected to hold that post. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and social science from Johnson C. Smith University, a Master of Arts degree in history from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a Ph.D.

Dr. McClaurin Sends Message to Shaw Community - "Shaw Is Open for Business"

Dr. Irma McClaurin, President of Shaw University, released a message to the Shaw community July 9 which emphasized that the university is open and ready for students for the Fall 2011 semester.

"To paraphrase Mark Twain, the rumors of Shaw University's demise are greatly exaggerated. We are not closed. And, we are now, and always have been, accredited.

Shaw President Meets With President Barack Obama

(Durham, NC) – Shaw President Dr. Irma McClaurin was part of a delegation that met with President Barack Obama prior to his address in Durham yesterday which detailed the economic initiatives which he unveiled at the headquarters of Cree Incorporated.

Dr. McClaurin was the only university president in the group of Triangle-area elected officials and community representatives in the gathering.

City To Honor Shaw Champions As Part of Farmers Market Opening

The Shaw University sports champions will be honored as part of the Raleigh Downtown Alliance's Spring Fling to celebrate the opening of the Downtown Raleigh Farmers Market on Wednesday, April 27. The Spring Fling will run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. while the ceremony honoring the champions Bears will begin at 10:30 in City Plaza on Fayetteville Street.

Shaw Suspends Classes For Remainder of Semester

Shaw University will suspend classes for the rest of the Spring 2011 semester as of April 17, following the devastating damage done to its campus by yesterday's tornado. "While we exist to educate these young men and women, our first priority is their safety and well being," said Shaw President Dr. Irma McClaurin. "With this widespread damage, we could not resume operations in time to continue classes over the next two weeks." Eight days of classes remained, as well as a one-week long exam period.

Governor Honors Shaw Champions

North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue today welcomed Shaw University's football, men's basketball and women's basketball teams to the Executive Mansion in a celebration of their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) titles. "There are little boys and little girls all over North Carolina who are going to see your pictures in the papers tomorrow, they're going to see you on YouTube, on the internet and they're going to dream about being you," said Governor Perdue at the reception. "They're going to be inspired because of the way you live your life.
